About Tonelist

Over the years Limerick has produced great musical acts such as Granny's Intentions, Tuesday Blue, The Driven, The Hitchers, Woodstar, and of course, The Cranberries — one of Ireland's biggest musical exports ever.

And now with the ‘Limrock’ music scene healthier than its been in years, Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan decided it was time to celebrate the current crop of new musical talent coming out of the Treaty City through the release of the compilation, Tonelist.

About The Tonelist Album

A Top-Notch Collection of Tunes

Last year Hogan and Limerick Live 95FM's Green and Live show set about putting together the tracklisting for a compilation album to highlight the many brilliantly diverse bands and solo artists making music in Limerick city.

The resulting album, Tonelist, features a top-notch collection of tunes by better known Limerick acts such as We Should Be Dead, Giveamanakick, Vesta Varro, Headgear and Noel Hogan's latest project Arkitekt, alongside some up and coming names worth taking notice of including Drumming Room, Supermodel Twins, Pio, The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra, Alkali Flat, Seneca, Brendan Markham, Walter Mitty And The Realists, and Mark O'Connor.

A Celebration of Limerick's Music Scene

According to Noel Hogan of Gohan Records: “This CD is first and foremost a celebration of Limerick's rich and diverse music scene. There are so many great bands and singers in Limerick doing great work right now and they really deserve to be heard by a larger audience.” “The objective is to highlight the huge amount of wonderful music being created locally and to give it a springboard onto the national stage,” said Hogan.

Limerick-based label, Gohan Records (Monoband, Arkitekt), is now giving the city and county's rising, young musical stars the opportunity to get their wares out to a wider audience with the release of this compilation album featuring the very best local talent.

Drumming Room

Drumming Room

Drumming Room is David Carroll on drums and laptop and he has been developing the Drumming Room sound since 2007. After developing a solid electronic sound combined with pounding drums and playing a few low profile gigs, the Drumming Room sound started to develop. David then spent a year in London studying drums in more detail and so that both programming and drumming skills could be mastered.

Giveamanakick

Giveamanakick

The local noiseniks, hailed as one of Ireland's most inventive and powerful bands, released their third album Welcome To The Cusp in April this year. The follow-up their subversive Is It OK To Be Loud, Jesus? and We Are The Way Forward albums, have invited much-deserved critical acclaim on the GAMAK boys.

Headgear

Headgear

Ever since the 2000 single Wonderdog, which Daragh Dukes co-wrote with Dotty (an aged Airdale terrier), Headgear have explored themes of identity and oblivion using all available means. In Headgear, Daragh is joined by a merry bunch of talents, and together they construct a hypnotic and optimistic sound that is truly original.

We Should Be Dead

We Should Be Dead

In 2008 the Limerick outfit shot to the top of the Irish music scene with their contagious brand of bubblegum pop that has seen them compared to everyone from The Shangri-Las to The Ramones, The Runaways and Blondie. The quartet was nominated for the RTE 2FM Hope for 2008 Meteor Award and saw their debut single Forget Romance, Let's Dance land at number three in the Irish download charts as well as gaining major airplay on national radio at home and huge exposure on BBC Radio One in the UK.

Supermodel Twins

Supermodel Twins

Supermodel Twins are purveyors of perfect three-minute pop songs that combine intelligent lyrics about love, lust and loneliness with infectious melodies, sinful harmonies and dramatic guitar-crescendos delivered in a Beatles-style swagger. Influenced by the likes of Weezer, Nada Surf and Jimmy Eat World, Supermodel Twins' sound brims with moments of wry genius that owes more to the genuine pop masterworks of The Beach Boys and Burt Bacharach than its modern day imitators.

Vesta Varra

Vesta Varro

Vesta Varro have toured across Ireland, the UK and North America, sharing a stage with the likes of Editors, Bell X1 and The Frames. Four of their songs have been licensed to Major American TV Network CBS and the video for their song Believe has been on heavy rotation on Canada's Much Music, the premier music channel. All the Love Songs is a previously unreleased track that showcases a different musical style to the songs that appeared on their debut album Exit Here.

Arkitekt

Arkitekt

PIO

PIO

In words of PIO themselves, “Hello I'm Niall. I'm David. One day we met through a friend of a friend. The next afternoon Niall Brought his guitar to my house. After playing music for most of the evening we Discovered we had formed a band. Sometimes we're shy. Sometimes we're very protective. Most of the time we're lazy and enjoy counting the number of gigs we've had on our hands. We needed a drummer. Our friend Brian knew Jo. She Plays drums. Now Jo plays drums with us. Our plan is to play to more people. Hopefully someday you will hear us play. We call ourselves PIO after our friend. It's not actually his name....long story.”

The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra

The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra

The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra's music is a blend of warm vocal harmonies, classy instrumentation and ear-catching melodies, desperately hard to categorise yet strangely easy to love. According to State Magazine, “the stark vocal contrast provided by the three Limerick siblings up front quickly lodges in the skull. Enjoyable and uplifting!”

Alkalai Flat

Alkalai Flat

Alkali Flat is a bedroom music project that eventually left those four walls to play live and have some memorable shows around Ireland. Although it is a solo project by Alan Fitzgerald, all live shows are joined by Garry Carroll of Dryad's Saddle, Gerry has become a full time member of Alkali Flats. The songs are crafted with heaps of intricate drumwork, soft effortless vocals, and catchy guitar riffs.

Seneca

Seneca

Seneca's debut album, Sweeter Than Bourbon, is a polished and tuneful gem that brims with graceful realism and wistful melodies. Songs such as Clarity, Playing Fair, Sentimental Freak and So Beautiful are earthy and complex affairs, which find the band dipping in and out of eclectic influences ranging from Arcade Fire to Jeff Buckley, Smashing Pumpkins and Kila, to produce a very melodious and emotive debut album. The band blends the naked and heartfelt sincerity of Damien Rice's lyrics with Snow Patrol's sweeping and propulsive arrangements to create a warm and luscious folk/rock hybrid.

Brendan Markham

Brendan Markham

Enigmatic songsmith Brendan Markham is due to release his stunning solo album False Witness late 2009. Markham is a former member of Limerick rock band The Driven who in their day supported everyone from The Stereophonics to Sting and Weezer.

Walter Mitty & The Realists

Walter Mitty & The Realists

Winners of Indie Week 2008 in Toronto, Walter Mitty and the Realists have become one of Ireland's most high profile unsigned acts in recent times. By mashing the incendiary urgency of punk rock with primal funkadelic rhythms the quartet have created a sound that is highly energetic and explosively-charged. In recent times they have played high profile support shows with UK indie-rockers Dirty Pretty Things and experimental Icelandic outfit MuM, as well a being lauded by music critics for their “psychotic live energy”

Mark O'Connor

Mark O'Connor

Limrock's Mark O'Connor is a local legend. A musician, producer, writer and performer, Mark’s pretty much worked with every Limerick band of any note in recent years. O'Connor's debut album Robin's Egg Blues, which mixes everything from Americana to punk-pop, dreamy folk and lots of discordant and mesmerising soundscapes,is one of the finest Irish records of recent times.
